Christmas, the Feast of the Nativity

December 25, 2020

Christmas, also known as the  Feast of the Nativity, is an annual festival celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries around the world, as it is celebrated by any, though not all, Christians. While the actual month and date of Jesus’ birth are unknown, many claim that December 25 was chosen in the early fourth century as it corresponds to the date of the winter solstice. Others say that the Holy Spirit descended upon Mary on what would be March 25 of the modern Gregorian calendar, thus Christ’s birth, Christmas, would then be nine months later. As Christians, we understand that God sending His Son to atone for the sins of humanity is the cause of true celebration, not Jesus’ actual birth date.
